Most of us understand that we need to eat healthy food for weight loss, good health and longevity but according to research, there are actually some foods that really can help to fight the ageing process. These are the foods often referred to as “Superfoods”. Most of us have heard this term, but don’t really understand what it actually means.

Superfoods are foods that are nutrient rich and considered to be especially beneficial to your health and well being. Most nutritional therapists would advise us that if we take regard of this definition, then most unprocessed foods could be regarded as Superfoods. However, there are some Superfoods that really seem to have anti-ageing benefits.

1) Berries
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries are all rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and Vitamin E which fight the production of free radicals which cause you to age. It’s interesting to note that Blueberries are considered Super –Duper Superfoods, so even though they look small and insignificant they are fabulous anti-aging super heroes! So ladies get sprinkling with those blueberries on your morning porridge!

2) Avocado
In the past you may have avoided avocado’s as they are high in calories. However, they are wonderful for your skin – think about how many skin treatments and skin creams contain avocado! The best way to treat your body isn’t by slathering it all over your face however, you are better off eating avocado: remember beauty and health starts from the inside out!

3) Oysters
Not everyone’s cup of tea and many are put off by their slimy texture and salty taste. However, these slippery little blighters are rich in zinc which is vital for the production of collagen and this keeps your skin looking young. As many people know Oysters are regarded as a natural aphrodisiac which makes you feel more sexy. Indulging more in the physical side of your relationship will make you feel good and is also good exercise: essential for keeping you looking youthful and toned!

4) Lemons & Limes
These gorgeous citrus fruits are not just destined for your G & T! They may be acidic to the tongue, but they are actually high in alkaline and this gives them anti-bacterial properties, which helps you to maintain a healthy gut. They also help to counterbalance the acidity in your skin, which also helps with collagen production: keeping your skin youthful and peachy looking. If you cannot tolerate sucking on a lemon or lime, and you know that drinking too many G& T’s is not a healthy option, then try squeezing the juice into a glass of water for that extra zingy taste.

5) Nuts
I know that like avocados we have all been terrified by the calorific content of nuts. However, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds and brazil nuts all contain high levels of Selenium which is an antioxidant. Selenium helps the skin by maintaining its elasticity and therefore inhibits ageing and wrinkles. The two super Nuts here are considered to be Brazil nuts and Almonds because they are rich in Omega 6 fatty acids, which are good for lowering cholesterol levels.
Now when we are talking “nuts” we are not talking about shovelling handfuls of salty peanuts or cashews in to your mouth whilst swigging alcohol like there is no tomorrow! What we are talking about here is a small handful of unsalted nuts or a sprinkle of chopped nuts served with your breakfast or in yoghurt. So don’t take this as an excuse to overindulge as the Christmas parties loom on the horizon!
