The only thing that stands between you and success is: Getting started and never quitting! You can solve your biggest problem by getting started, right here, and now.
Robert H Schuller
How true is the quote above? I would say very true. Many people “think” about losing weight, want to lose weight and yet either don’t take action to do something about losing weight, or they start a diet with all good intentions and then very quickly lose their motivation, or get bored with what they are having to eat and then start to “cheat” and very quickly revert back to their old way of eating. Hence, they never achieve success because they quit before they get there.
So what is the best way to get started with losing weight?
Firstly, I would suggest that the first step is not to see losing weight as “dieting” but as a lifestyle change. Now that sounds a bit scary to some people as it implies huge changes that need to be made, and that can feel overwhelming. What I am actually talking about here is framing your weight loss as a way of making some tweaks to your eating habits and behaviour. In this way, it is not a temporary “sticky plaster” approach to your weight problem, but a long term solution, which could mean that you don’t ever have to diet again! Thinking about losing weight in this frame of mind, removes some of the pressure of dieting, as it is an evolving process of getting healthier, fitter and slimmer.
So right now, make a decision to take some action on your habits and behaviour around food. What could you do today, that will impact positively on your weight? Here are some tweaks below that my clients have made, to get started on creating new habits and behaviour around food and eating that have helped them start to lose weight:
- keep a food log, to write down exactly what you are eating. This helps you to see exactly what you are doing that is making you put on the weight!
- Ensure you eat 3 meals a day with only a couple of snacks in between.
- Replace unhealthy snacks with two healthy options.
- Use a smaller plate for your main meals, thus reducing your portion sizes.
- Drink alcohol only twice a week, instead of having a glass of wine every night.
- choose lower alcohol options instead of wine.
- Increase your fruit and vegetable intake.
Can you see that these small tweaks, will get you started with a whole new approach to losing weight. Notice that there is no deprivation, banned foods or strict detoxing in this simple list of tweaks.
