My son is now 10 years of age, but I can remember when he was 18 months old and it was necessary for me to find a new role and return to the working world. After having been a “stay at home” mum for 18 months, I was really confident about looking after my gorgeous son, but I suddenly didn’t feel so confident about finding a new job and venturing back in to the world of my career.
The thought of interviews made me feel wobbly: it seemed a long time since I had donned my professional attire and been responsible, dynamic and efficient. (It was enough of a challenge, to get to the baby massage group in clean clothes and on time!)
I can actually remember my first interview and being asked the question about prioritizing work and heavy workloads and answering with what was my previous “stock” response about coming in early or working late etc to deal with high priority or higher than usual workload, and then stopped mid-sentence as the realization hit me that I was no longer just a professional woman, but a mum with responsibility for a young child and therefore couldn’t be as flexible as I had been: that was a real light bulb moment!
On top of this, my figure had changed a great deal since having my son, and I wasn’t long out of my “big” maternity clothes, but still had some baby weight to lose: so the next dilemma was “what to wear” for interviews, for the workplace etc. None of my previous business clothes fitted me and I felt that they were part of my “old” identity – ie the one pre-mum! I certainly didn’t want to go back to work as a frumpy mummy, I wanted to be a “yummy mummy!” Also with the expenses of having a child and not working for 18 months, there wasn’t a great deal of spare cash to blow on a whole new wardrobe.
The good news is that I managed to get myself sorted and did finally re-enter the world of work and learned a great deal about balancing my priorities as a mum with the responsibilities of my working life. Since then, life has changed again,….. but that is another story!
However, if you identify with the wardrobe, figure and confidence dilemas that I experienced, then I would like to share with you a course that I am running with my colleague, Sandra Collins: called From Mum2Me.
